Do junk removal companies donate items?

Not all do — here’s how to tell, and where Junk Nurse routes donatable items in Aurora.

Quick Answer: Not all junk removal companies actually donate items. Many advertise “eco-friendly” or “we recycle” while routing everything to the transfer station. Junk Nurse specifically routes donatable items to Hesed House, Furniture Bank of Illinois, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Salvation Army, and Goodwill. We can tell you where each piece went.

The honest truth about junk removal donations

Donation routing takes time. Donation centers have specific hours. They have capacity limits and condition standards. Some require pre-coordination, especially for larger furniture pieces. Driving to a donation center adds 30–60 minutes to a typical job versus routing straight to the transfer station.

That’s why some haulers skip it. They advertise “we donate” on the website, but in practice the load goes straight to disposal. The customer never knows.

How to tell if a junk removal company actually donates

Ask specific questions:

  • “Which nonprofits do you donate to?” A good answer names specific local organizations. A vague answer (“wherever they accept”) is a red flag.
  • “Can you tell me where my items went after a job?” A company actually doing this can answer yes.
  • “What percentage of a typical load gets donated?” Honest answer: variable by job, but on a clean residential cleanout, 30–60% by volume is realistic. Answers over 80% are usually exaggerated.
  • “Do you sort on the truck or at a transfer station?” Real donation routing means sorting on the truck. “Sorted at the transfer station” usually means “mixed load, transfer station handles it.”

Where Junk Nurse routes donatable items

Hesed House (Aurora)

The largest comprehensive homeless shelter in Illinois outside Chicago. Founded in 1983, they run a supportive housing program that places residents from shelter into permanent housing. Those apartments need furniture. We route a substantial share of usable furniture here.

Furniture Bank of Illinois (Carol Stream)

Supplies furniture to families exiting domestic violence shelters and to refugee resettlement programs. Specific needs vary by week.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Aurora and Wheaton)

Takes furniture, working appliances, building materials, fixtures, doors, cabinets. Sells them at the ReStore to fund Habitat home builds.

Salvation Army (Aurora and Naperville)

Broad acceptance — clothing, books, smaller household items, kitchenware.

Goodwill (multiple Fox Valley locations)

Similar profile to Salvation Army. We rotate between donation partners based on capacity.

What qualifies an item for donation

  • Structurally sound (no broken frames, missing parts, or major damage)
  • Clean enough that someone would willingly receive it
  • No staining, smoke smell, pest infestation, or biohazards
  • Working condition for appliances and electronics
  • Meets current safety standards (especially for cribs, car seats, child gear)

What doesn’t qualify for donation

  • Mattresses (most donation centers no longer accept due to bed bug concerns)
  • Stained or damaged upholstered furniture
  • Particle-board furniture that’s been disassembled
  • Non-working electronics or appliances
  • Heavily worn or stained clothing
  • Items with safety recalls

These items go to scrap metal, e-waste recycling, mattress recycling, or final disposal — whichever is appropriate.

It’s not an upcharge

Donation routing is built into our standard pricing. We don’t add a “donation fee” or charge extra to route through the nonprofit instead of the transfer station. Companies that charge extra for donations are using it as marketing rather than as a practice.
