If you’re renovating any room larger than a closet, you need a dumpster. Even a small bathroom remodel produces more debris than your weekly trash pickup will accept — and trying to make multiple dump-run trips with your own truck eats up project time you don’t have. This guide walks through which Aurora-area renovations need a dumpster, what size, and how to plan placement so the dumpster doesn’t end up in the wrong spot.
Which Renovations Need a Dumpster?
Always Need a Dumpster
- Kitchen remodels (cabinet tear-out, countertop replacement, flooring)
- Bathroom gut renovations (tile, tub/shower, drywall, vanity)
- Whole-house flooring replacement
- Drywall replacement (mold remediation, water damage repair)
- Deck demolition (lumber, decking material, railings)
- Window or door replacement (multiple units)
- Basement finishing or refinishing (demo phase)
Maybe Need a Dumpster
- Single-room flooring replacement — depends on whether you’re hauling old carpet only (might fit junk removal) or carpet plus tack strips, padding, baseboards (dumpster better)
- Painting projects with significant prep (drywall repair, wallpaper removal)
- Built-in furniture demolition (single unit)
Don’t Need a Dumpster
- Cosmetic-only renovations (paint, light fixtures, hardware)
- Single appliance swap
- Backsplash-only replacement

Sizing by Renovation Type
Bathroom Remodel
A typical full bathroom gut produces 4–6 cubic yards of debris (tile, drywall, vanity, fixtures, flooring). A 10-yard dumpster is usually plenty. Upgrade to a 15-yard if you’re also replacing the bathtub with a heavy cast-iron tub or doing two bathrooms simultaneously.
Kitchen Remodel
Kitchens produce more debris than people expect — cabinets are bulky, old appliances take up volume, and the flooring is usually replaced too. Plan on:
- Small kitchen (under 100 sq ft): 10-yard dumpster
- Standard kitchen (100–200 sq ft): 15-yard dumpster
- Large kitchen with island and pantry: 20-yard dumpster
Flooring Replacement
For whole-house flooring replacement, size based on what you’re removing:
- Carpet only: 10-yard usually suffices, since carpet rolls compact well
- Tile or hardwood: 15-yard — tile is heavy and bulky, hardwood adds significant volume
- Mixed flooring across multiple rooms: 20-yard
Drywall Demo
Drywall is heavy and takes up volume. Rough estimate: 1 cubic yard of drywall debris per 100 square feet of wall demolition. For a single-room drywall replacement, a 10-yard fits. For a basement or multiple rooms, go 15 or 20-yard.
Deck Demolition
Wood decking compacts decently if you break it down. A standard 12×16 deck demo fits in a 10 or 15-yard. Composite decking is heavier — size up.
Placement During Active Renovation
Distance From Work Area
The closer the dumpster, the faster the project moves. Every 50 feet of carry distance adds time and tires out your crew. Ideal placement: on the driveway, as close to the door nearest the work area as the truck can drop it.
Side-Door vs. Garage Access
Most Aurora homes have a side door or back door closer to bathrooms and kitchens than the front. Position the dumpster on that side of the driveway if possible. For garage-adjacent kitchens, dropping right at the garage door makes loading drywall and cabinets easy.
Driveway Clearance
You still need to fit cars somewhere during the renovation. Plan placement so at least one parking spot remains accessible — or be ready to park on the street.
Overhead Clearance
Delivery trucks need about 23 feet of overhead clearance to drop a roll-off. Trees, power lines, garage door tracks, and basketball hoops all matter. We’ll confirm during booking.
Timing the Rental With Your Renovation Phases
Demo Phase
This is when you need the dumpster. Demo produces 80–90% of the debris on most renovations. Schedule delivery the day before demo starts.
Build Phase
During the build, you produce minimal debris (cardboard, plastic wrap, off-cuts). You probably don’t need a dumpster during this phase — bag the trash and save money.
Finish Phase
Final cleanup might produce another small wave (paint cans, drop cloths, packaging). Consider a second short rental or a junk removal pickup if the volume warrants.
Common Aurora-Area Renovation Considerations
Older Homes (Pre-1978)
Many homes in central and east Aurora date before 1978 — that’s the cutoff for lead paint regulations. If you’re disturbing painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes, EPA RRP rules apply. Debris from RRP-regulated work goes in regular construction debris dumpsters, but the work itself must be done by RRP-certified contractors. Not a dumpster issue, but worth knowing.
Asbestos Concerns
Pre-1980s homes may have asbestos in floor tile, popcorn ceilings, and insulation. If asbestos is suspected, get it tested before demo. Asbestos-containing material requires licensed abatement — never goes in a regular dumpster.
HOA Restrictions
Many Aurora subdivisions have HOA rules about visible construction debris. Some require dumpsters to be inside garages (rare and small dumpsters only) or to be removed within a certain timeframe. Check before you book.
Dumpster vs. Junk Removal During Renovation
Some renovation phases work better with junk removal:
- Heavy single items. One old cast-iron tub, one old refrigerator — call junk removal for these, even if you have a dumpster. A crew can carry them out without you breaking your back.
- End-of-project cleanup. If you’re days from done and only have a half-dumpster’s worth of debris left, a junk removal pickup is faster than another rental.
Junk Nurse does both — we’ll suggest whichever fits your phase.
Renovation Dumpster Budget Planning
Roll the dumpster cost into your renovation budget from the start. For a typical bathroom remodel, dumpster rental is 5–10% of total project cost. For a kitchen, around 2–5%. Don’t try to skip it and end up with a yard full of debris.
