Air conditioner removal in Aurora involves federal Section 608 refrigerant compliance — the same rules that apply to refrigerators. Window AC units, portable AC units, and central AC condensers all contain regulated refrigerants. Junk Nurse handles every type compliantly, routing units to processors that recover the refrigerant before recycling.
The three AC types we remove
Window air conditioners
The most common pickup. Standard window units run 50–100 lbs depending on BTU rating. Most older Aurora homes have at least one in storage or still installed. We handle:
- Pulling the unit from the window (we’ll bring two people for any unit over 60 lbs)
- Disposing of the unit through a Section 608 compliant processor
- Recycling the metal components
If the unit is currently installed in a window, we’ll remove it — just have a path cleared and let us know the floor/window it’s in when you book.
Portable air conditioners
The freestanding floor units with a vent hose going to a window. 60–90 lbs typically. Easier to move than window units because they roll on casters. Same Section 608 rules apply — refrigerant has to be recovered before disposal.
Central AC condensers (outdoor unit)
The metal box outside your house that fans warm air. Standard residential condensers weigh 150–300 lbs. They contain significantly more refrigerant than a window unit, and they’re connected to copper line sets running to your indoor evaporator coil.
Important: an HVAC technician has to disconnect the condenser before we remove it. Specifically:
- The refrigerant has to be evacuated and recovered from the line set
- The line set has to be properly cut and capped
- The electrical disconnect has to be powered down and disconnected at the unit
This is exactly the same prep an HVAC tech would do when installing a new system. If you’re replacing your central AC, your installing contractor will typically handle the old condenser removal as part of the install — sometimes for an upcharge.
If they don’t (or if you just want the old condenser gone without replacement), we step in after the HVAC tech has done the disconnect.
Mini-splits and ductless systems
Same as central AC — HVAC tech disconnects, then we remove. The outdoor units of mini-splits are typically smaller (80–150 lbs) but the refrigerant compliance is identical.
Section 608 compliance explained
Federal law (Clean Air Act Section 608) prohibits the venting of refrigerants to the atmosphere. Before any refrigerant-containing appliance is destroyed, dismantled, or otherwise disposed of, the refrigerant must be recovered by an EPA-certified technician.
For homeowners, this means:
- You can’t legally puncture or crush a refrigerant-containing appliance on your own property.
- The hauler taking your AC unit has to route it through a facility that recovers the refrigerant.
- This applies to all refrigerant types — older R-22, current R-410a, R-134a in some portable units.
Junk Nurse complies as a baseline. The cost of compliant disposal is built into our pricing — no separate fee added at the door.

Window AC unit pickup — what to expect
If the unit is currently installed in a window:
- We arrive within the scheduled window.
- One crew member is inside, one outside if it’s a ground-floor window. For higher floors, both inside.
- We unscrew or release the mounting brackets.
- We tilt and slide the unit out of the window. Two people lift it down.
- We close and lock the window before leaving.
- We load the unit and route to a Section 608 processor.
If the unit is already out of the window (in a garage, basement, or storage), it’s even easier — just a load-and-haul.
Central AC condenser removal — the workflow
Most central AC removal happens during a system replacement. Here’s the typical order:
- HVAC technician arrives to install new system.
- Tech recovers refrigerant from old system per EPA rules.
- Tech disconnects old condenser from line set and electrical.
- Tech installs new condenser, new line set, evacuates the new system, and starts it up.
- Old condenser is left for haul-away.
Junk Nurse comes after step 5. We disconnect anything left (mounting brackets to the pad), load the old condenser, and haul it to a scrap metal recycler. The copper, aluminum, and steel are reclaimed.
If your HVAC company offers to haul away the old unit themselves, sometimes their fee is reasonable. If not, our cost is typically lower — ask both for quotes.
AC removal cost in Aurora
- Window AC unit (single): $50–$100
- Window AC units (multiple, e.g., 3–4 from one house): $100–$200 total
- Portable AC unit: $50–$100
- Central AC condenser (already disconnected by HVAC): $100–$200
- Mini-split outdoor unit (already disconnected): $75–$150
- Multiple AC units combined with other appliances: volume pricing applies
The condenser metal content gives these jobs some scrap value, which we factor into the pricing.
Tips for window AC removal
- Don’t try to pull a heavy window AC out by yourself. Even 50–60 lb units are awkward and tilt unpredictably. Falls from second-floor windows are not survivable for the unit and possibly worse for you.
- Don’t leave a window AC half-installed across winters. The seal fails, water gets behind the unit, and the surrounding window frame rots. If you’re done with it, get it out.
- Old window units rarely fetch resale value. Energy efficiency standards mean a 10-year-old unit costs significantly more to run than a current Energy Star unit. Donation centers usually don’t want them.
What about R-22 (old refrigerant) units?
R-22 was phased out in the U.S. starting in 2010 and effectively unavailable for service after 2020. Many central AC systems installed before 2015 still use R-22. When these systems are removed:
- HVAC tech recovers any remaining R-22 (which has resale value because supply is limited)
- The unit is recycled normally
This is more complex than R-410a (current refrigerant) handling, but the licensed HVAC tech handles all of it before we get involved.
