Exercise Equipment Removal in Aurora, IL

Treadmills, ellipticals, home gyms, and all gym equipment removed from Aurora basements and second floors.

The home gym boom of 2020 left a lot of Aurora-area basements with a treadmill that hasn’t been used in years. Exercise equipment removal is one of our most common calls — treadmills, ellipticals, weight benches, stationary bikes, rowing machines, and full home gyms. Junk Nurse takes it all, with disassembly handled by us.

The COVID-era reality

Between March 2020 and the end of 2021, residential gym equipment sales went up by triple digits as gyms closed and people set up home workouts. By 2022 and 2023, much of that equipment had been used a handful of times and then turned into a glorified clothes rack in a basement, spare bedroom, or finished garage.

Now those basements need to be cleared — for finishing projects, for selling the house, for adopting a kid, for converting space back to a usable room. Junk Nurse handles a lot of this in Aurora, North Aurora, Naperville, and the surrounding Fox Valley communities.

Equipment we routinely remove

Treadmills

Standard residential treadmills weigh 200–400 lbs depending on motor size and frame. NordicTrack, ProForm, Sole, LifeFitness, Precor, Peloton Tread — we’ve hauled all of them. Folding treadmills are easier; non-folding commercial-style treadmills require more disassembly to fit through doorways.

If your treadmill is in a basement, it almost certainly came down in pieces and has to go up the same way. We disassemble on-site, carry components up separately, and re-load the truck efficiently. Don’t try to walk a treadmill up the basement stairs as a single unit — we’ve seen the result.

Ellipticals

Heavier than people expect. Most home ellipticals run 200–300 lbs assembled. The flywheel mechanism is dense, the foot rails are long, and they’re awkward to move intact. We typically disassemble for basement and second-floor pickups.

Stationary bikes (spin bikes, recumbent bikes, Peloton)

Lighter and easier — 50–150 lbs for most home spin bikes. Recumbent bikes are larger but still manageable. Peloton bikes have a screen we can either include with the disposal or separate for electronics recycling.

Rowing machines

Concept 2, WaterRower, magnetic rowers. Most break down into two pieces for transport (rail and flywheel). 60–100 lbs. Easy pickup compared to other gym equipment.

Weight benches and racks

Olympic benches, squat racks, half racks, full power cages. Steel-frame, 100–400 lbs depending on type. Heavy but compact. Sometimes bolted together; we disassemble for transport.

Free weights and plates

Dumbbells, kettlebells, weight plates, barbells. Heavy. Per-pound it’s the densest stuff we haul. We take them — just be honest about quantity when you call so we can plan crew and truck space. 500 lbs of weight plates is a different job than 50.

Home gyms / multi-stations

Bowflex, Total Gym, Body-Solid stations, Tuff Stuff, Marcy — the all-in-one home gym systems. These almost always require complete disassembly to remove because they were built in place. Plan for 30–60 minutes of disassembly time per unit, which is built into the pricing.

Other equipment we take

  • Punching bags (free-standing and hanging)
  • Yoga and Pilates equipment (reformers, mats, blocks)
  • Functional trainers and cable machines
  • Vibration plates
  • Sauna units (smaller infrared models)
  • Boxing rings and martial arts equipment
  • Massage chairs and recovery devices

Disassembly: what we handle

Almost all gym equipment that goes through a doorway or down a staircase needs some disassembly. We come prepared with:

  • Adjustable wrenches, sockets, hex keys (the standard fasteners on gym equipment)
  • Cordless impact drivers for stubborn or rust-frozen bolts
  • Bolt cutters for cables and broken hardware
  • Penetrating lubricant for rusted joints (common on basement equipment)

You don’t need to pre-disassemble anything. In fact, doing so often makes our job harder because we don’t know which parts came from which bolts. Just leave it as-is and we’ll handle it.

Donation: where working equipment goes

If your equipment still works and is in reasonable cosmetic condition, donation is often the right path. We route to:

  • Local community centers and youth programs — the Aurora YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, and similar organizations sometimes accept donated equipment.
  • Public schools — especially high school athletic departments and weight rooms with limited budgets.
  • Habitat ReStore — some locations resell exercise equipment.
  • Smaller gyms and PT clinics — occasionally interested in lightly used equipment.
  • Facebook Marketplace free section — for pickup-by-customer arrangements.

The honest reality: donating exercise equipment is harder than donating furniture. Most charities can’t store or move it. Most schools have specific equipment needs. The window for “your treadmill finds a new home” is narrower than people assume. We try, but for older or worn equipment, disposal is often the realistic outcome.

What disqualifies equipment from donation

  • Non-working motors, electronics, or controls
  • Frayed or worn belts (treadmills, ellipticals)
  • Significant rust or corrosion
  • Frame damage or stability issues
  • Missing parts (missing weight plates, missing cables, missing pins)
  • Very old models with no parts availability

If your equipment falls into “not donatable,” we route through the appropriate disposal — metal frames go to scrap, electronics components to e-recycling per Illinois law.

Common scenarios from Aurora-area customers

“I bought a Peloton and a treadmill in 2020. Neither has been used in 18 months. Basement.” — classic call. We disassemble both, carry components upstairs, and have you done in 60–90 minutes. Typical price $200–$350.

“My ex left a home gym in the garage. I want it gone.” — we’ve cleared a lot of these. Single-trip, $250–$450 depending on what’s there.

“Dad passed away. The basement has 30 years of gym equipment, including weights and a power rack.” — estate cleanouts of weight rooms are heavier than they look. We send the right crew and a full truck.

“We’re finishing the basement and the gym has to go this week.” — same-day or next-day in most cases.
