Riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors are heavy, fuel-bearing, and not something you can roll to the curb on trash day. Junk Nurse takes broken, old, or unwanted mowers across Aurora and the Fox Valley — just drain the fuel and oil before pickup, and we handle the rest.
The basics of riding mower disposal
A typical residential riding lawn mower weighs 400–800 lbs depending on deck size and engine. A small lawn tractor is on the lighter end; a zero-turn or garden tractor can run 600–1,000 lbs. They’re mostly steel, with a gas engine, battery, hydraulic components (in some models), and tires.
What makes mower disposal different from other big appliance jobs:
- Fuel and oil must be drained. Fire hazard, environmental issue, and required by most disposal facilities.
- Battery has to come out. Lead-acid batteries are banned from landfills and require separate recycling.
- Awkward shape and weight. Wide deck, low center of gravity — not a normal furniture move.
- Scrap value. The metal in a mower is worth real money at the scrapyard, which is why this works as a junk removal call.
Pre-pickup prep on your end
Before we arrive, two things need to happen:
1. Drain the gas tank
If the mower still runs, the easiest way is to run it until it’s out of fuel. If it doesn’t run, siphon or pump the remaining fuel into an approved container. Then dispose of the fuel properly:
- Use it in another gas tool (assuming it’s still good)
- Drop it off at a Kane County household hazardous waste collection event (free, periodic)
- Give it to a neighbor with a working mower
Don’t pour fuel on the ground or into a storm drain.
2. Drain the engine oil
Look for the drain plug under the engine block, or use the oil dipstick to suction it out with a small pump. Capture the oil in a sealed container and take it to:
- An auto parts store (AutoZone, O’Reilly, Advance) — most accept used motor oil for free
- Kane County hazardous waste collection
- A local mechanic shop that recycles oil
You don’t have to remove the battery yourself — we can pop it out on-site and route it to lead-acid battery recycling separately.
What we do once we arrive
- Verify fuel/oil are drained. Quick check; if not done, we can sometimes finish the drain on-site for an upcharge (rare).
- Remove the battery. Battery goes to lead-acid recycling.
- Load the mower. We use ramps and a winch if needed for non-running mowers. For running mowers, you can sometimes drive it up the ramp yourself.
- Haul to scrap metal recycler. The mower is processed for steel, aluminum, and copper. Any usable parts are sometimes pulled by the scrapyard for resale.

Push mowers, weed eaters, and other yard equipment
While we’re at it, we take:
- Push mowers (manual reel and powered)
- Weed eaters and string trimmers (gas and electric)
- Leaf blowers
- Hedge trimmers and chainsaws
- Snowblowers
- Edgers
- Tillers
- Pressure washers
Same prep rules — drain gas and oil from gas-powered equipment. Electric equipment is easier; just unplug and we’ll handle the rest.
Tractor and larger equipment removal
Compact tractors, garden tractors, and small farm tractors are within our wheelhouse but typically require an on-site quote because of weight, loading challenges, and disposal routing. Some smaller compact tractors run 1,500–2,500 lbs, which requires our larger truck and sometimes additional equipment for loading.
If you have a tractor to remove, send photos when you call and we’ll plan accordingly.
Riding mower disposal cost in Aurora
- Standard residential riding mower (drained and battery in place): $100–$200
- Zero-turn or garden tractor: $150–$275
- Lawn tractor with attached accessories (cart, plow, etc.): $175–$300
- Small push mower: $40–$75 (or included free with a larger job)
- Combined pickup with other yard equipment: volume pricing applies
If your mower has significant scrap value (heavier units, garden tractors, working engines), we’ll factor that into the quote — sometimes meaningfully reducing the price. Always confirmed upfront.
Donation: is your old mower worth saving?
Honest answer: usually not. Used residential mowers in working condition can be sold on Facebook Marketplace for $100–$400 if you have the time to deal with it. Donation centers rarely accept gas-powered equipment because of fuel, liability, and storage issues.
If your mower is running well and you want to find it a home before disposing, try:
- Facebook Marketplace
- Craigslist Aurora / Fox Valley
- Asking neighbors directly
If it doesn’t move within a few weeks or it’s not worth the hassle, Junk Nurse will take it. Same-day in most cases.
Special situations
Mower stuck in a shed. Common. We’ll work the angles, sometimes disassemble the shed door frame temporarily, or extract through alternate access.
Mower hasn’t run in 10+ years and has rusted in place. We’ve seen them. We have the equipment to break them free and load.
Mower in the middle of a backyard. We extend our ramp and winch from the truck. Fine on most lots.
Tires flat or missing. Not a problem — we have skids and dollies that work without functional tires.
