Warehouse cleanouts operate on a different scale than office work. Pallet racking by the row. Industrial shelving in bulk. Old equipment ranging from forklift attachments to conveyor sections. Excess inventory accumulated over years. Junk Nurse handles warehouse equipment and inventory removal across Aurora and the Fox Valley with scaled crews and multi-day project capability. This guide walks through what we do, how we plan, and what to expect.
Common Warehouse Removal Scopes
Pallet Racking
The vertical steel structures that hold pallets. Common configurations:
- Selective rack (typical 2-deep pallet positions)
- Drive-in / drive-through rack (denser configurations)
- Push-back rack
- Pallet flow rack
- Cantilever rack (long items, lumber)
Racking is bolted together with beams, uprights, and bracing. Disassembly required before removal. We bring the right tools.
Industrial Shelving
- Boltless rivet shelving
- Wire decking
- Heavy-duty static shelving
- Modular wall storage
Equipment
- Non-operational forklifts and pallet jacks (after fluid drainage)
- Old conveyors and conveyor sections
- Industrial sorting equipment
- Material handling equipment (older models being replaced)
- Workstations (pack stations, ship stations)
Office Areas Within Warehouses
- Office furniture from on-site administrative spaces
- IT equipment
- Break room contents
Excess Inventory
- Damaged inventory not returnable to suppliers
- Obsolete inventory written off
- Customer-returned product not resellable
- Display samples
- Outdated promotional inventory

Pallet Racking: Steel Scrap Value
Steel pallet racking has significant scrap value. Junk Nurse routes racking to scrap metal recyclers who pay for the steel. For large racking removals:
- The scrap value can offset or partially cover disposal costs
- For high-quality, recent-model racking, used equipment dealers may purchase intact
- We discuss disposal vs. resale during the walkthrough
Used Racking Resale
Some racking has resale value to other warehouse operators:
- Standard configurations (selective rack, popular brands)
- Recent manufacture (under 10 years)
- Good condition (no impact damage)
Used pallet racking dealers (Aurora area has multiple) buy intact racking. If your removal is large enough, this may be the better path than scrapping. We coordinate.
Multi-Day Project Logistics
Why Multi-Day
Large warehouse cleanouts can’t fit in a single day:
- Pallet racking takes hours to disassemble per row
- Equipment removal often requires crane or specialized handling
- Inventory disposal may require sorting
- Trucks fill and need to be unloaded between trips
Typical Multi-Day Schedule
- Day 1: Walkthrough finalization, equipment positioning, easy items first
- Day 2–3: Pallet racking disassembly, heavy equipment removal
- Day 4–5: Final cleanup, inventory disposal, broom-clean
Specific timeline depends on warehouse size and scope.
Crew Scaling
Warehouse work requires scaled crews:
- Small warehouse (under 10,000 sq ft): 3–4 person crew
- Medium warehouse (10,000–30,000 sq ft): 5–7 person crew
- Large warehouse (30,000+ sq ft): 8+ person crew, sometimes multiple crews simultaneously
Forklift-Accessible vs. Manual Carry
Forklift-Accessible Jobs
For warehouses with operational forklifts and clear aisles, we move material in bulk via lift. Significantly faster.
Manual Carry Jobs
For warehouses where forklift access is limited (tight aisles, deactivated facilities), manual carry slows the work and increases labor requirements. Pricing reflects.
Inventory Disposal Considerations
Standard Inventory
Damaged, returned, or written-off inventory goes through standard disposal. We handle the haul.
Sensitive Inventory
Some inventory requires special handling:
- Confidential branded merchandise: May require destruction (clothing branded with logos, for instance)
- Recalled product: Documentation chain required
- Sensitive electronics: Drive destruction before disposal
Coordinate with us during the walkthrough.
Donation Routing for Usable Inventory
Some surplus inventory finds new homes:
- Damaged but functional product to nonprofits
- Discontinued items to thrift retailers
- Office supplies to schools and community organizations
COI for Warehouse Facilities
Warehouse facilities often have stringent COI requirements:
- $1M general liability (standard at Junk Nurse)
- Additional insured naming (building owner, parent company, etc.)
- Waiver of subrogation (varies)
- Specific aggregate requirements (some carriers require $2M+ aggregates)
Confirm specific COI requirements during scheduling so we can deliver correctly.
Safety Considerations
Active warehouses have specific safety protocols:
- Hi-vis vests for our crew
- PPE (steel-toe, safety glasses) standard
- Operating around active forklifts (when warehouse remains in operation)
- Working at height for racking disassembly (fall protection)
OSHA Compliance
For active facilities, our crew follows facility-specific safety protocols. Visitor sign-ins, safety briefings, and PPE compliance standard.
Disposal Routing for Warehouse Materials
Steel Racking and Shelving
Scrap metal recyclers — material recovery, often positive economic value.
Industrial Equipment
Scrap recyclers or used equipment dealers depending on condition.
Mixed Inventory
Transfer station for general waste streams.
Electronics
Licensed Illinois e-recyclers (compliance).
Hazardous Components
Hydraulic fluid, battery acid, etc. — specialized recyclers.
Pricing for Warehouse Cleanouts

- Medium warehouse (10,000–30,000 sq ft): $5,000–$15,000
- Large warehouse (30,000+ sq ft): $15,000+
Pricing variables:
