Can you put appliances in a dumpster?

Yes for most appliances, but refrigerators, freezers, and AC units need refrigerant recovery first. Here’s how it works.

Quick Answer: Most appliances yes — stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves are fine. Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units need refrigerant recovery first under EPA Section 608. Junk Nurse handles refrigerant recovery as part of our service — just let us know which items contain refrigerant.

Appliances That Go In a Dumpster Without Issue

  • Stoves and ovens
  • Dishwashers
  • Washers and dryers
  • Microwaves
  • Water heaters
  • Garbage disposals

All of these are scrap metal once dumped — they get recycled at the transfer station.

Appliances That Need Refrigerant Recovery First

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers (chest or upright)
  • Window air conditioners
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Wine coolers and mini-fridges

EPA Section 608 makes it illegal to dispose of these without first recovering the refrigerant. Putting them straight into a dumpster violates federal law.

How Refrigerant Recovery Works

A certified technician uses recovery equipment to pull the refrigerant out of the appliance into a sealed cylinder. The refrigerant is recycled or destroyed. The appliance can then be disposed of normally.

How Junk Nurse Handles It

Tell us during booking which appliances contain refrigerant. We coordinate recovery as part of pickup — you don’t have to find a separate service.

Donation Option

If the appliance still works, donation is a better path than disposal. Habitat for Humanity ReStore and similar organizations accept working appliances. Junk Nurse can route working appliances to donation when feasible — ask during booking.

Electronics Ban Also Applies

Don’t confuse appliances with electronics. Illinois bans electronics (TVs, computers, monitors) from landfills under separate state law. These also can’t go in a dumpster — they go to licensed e-recyclers.
