What Can (and Can’t) Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster?

A clear list of what’s allowed and what’s prohibited in a roll-off dumpster rental — and what happens if prohibited items show up.

Most of what you’d throw away can go in a roll-off dumpster — but not everything. A few categories are restricted by federal law, state law, or simple physics (weight limits). Putting prohibited items in your dumpster can mean extra fees, a refused pickup, or even environmental fines. This guide walks you through both sides clearly.

If you have a specific item you’re not sure about, just call Junk Nurse at (630) 294-1340. We’ll tell you straight whether it can go in.

What’s Allowed in a Roll-Off Dumpster

Household Junk

Anything you’d typically put in a household trash bag — clothing, papers, broken household items, kitchenware, toys, books. No restrictions on general household waste.

Furniture

Couches, chairs, mattresses, dressers, tables, desks, bookshelves. All standard furniture is allowed. Some companies add per-mattress fees — Junk Nurse doesn’t.

Appliances (With One Caveat)

Stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves — all fine. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant that has to be recovered first under EPA Section 608. Junk Nurse handles refrigerant recovery as part of our service.

Construction Debris

Drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets, doors, windows. All standard construction debris is allowed. Weight limits apply to heavy materials (see below).

Yard Waste

Branches, leaves, sod, brush, small stumps. Note: some transfer stations charge differently for yard waste, but it’s allowed in mixed loads.

Carpet and Padding

Roll it up, tie it off, and toss it in. Heavy when wet — keep that in mind for weight limits.

Question about a specific item? Call Junk Nurse at (630) 294-1340 before you load. Five seconds of asking beats a refused pickup. Mon–Sat, 7am–7pm.

What’s NOT Allowed in a Roll-Off Dumpster

Hazardous Materials

Federal and Illinois law prohibits these from landfills:

  • Paint (liquid). Latex paint can go in if completely dried out and solidified. Oil-based paint and stain — never.
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids. Take to an auto parts store or AutoZone — they accept used oil free.
  • Solvents, thinners, gasoline, kerosene. Hazardous waste — drop off at Kane or DuPage County hazardous waste events.
  • Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals. Same — county hazardous waste.
  • Propane tanks (full or empty). Even empty tanks have residual gas. Return to the exchange location.
  • Asbestos. Requires licensed abatement contractor. Never goes in a regular dumpster.

Tires

Tires are banned from Illinois landfills under state law. Some dumpster companies accept them with an extra fee ($5–$20 per tire). Junk Nurse routes tires to a separate recycler — let us know up front if you have them.

Electronics (Illinois Electronic Products Recycling Act)

Illinois banned electronics from landfills in 2012. That includes:

  • TVs and monitors
  • Computers, laptops, tablets
  • Printers, fax machines
  • Game consoles
  • DVD/Blu-ray players
  • Small electronics with a power cord

These have to go to a licensed e-recycler. Junk Nurse handles routing for you, but they can’t go in the roll-off mixed with other debris.

Refrigerant-Containing Appliances (Without Recovery)

Mentioned above, but worth repeating: refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers. These need refrigerant recovery before disposal. Mark them and we’ll handle it.

Liquid Waste

No liquids in dumpsters. Even non-hazardous liquids (pool water, cooking oil) cause leaks during transport and are typically rejected by the transfer station.

Medical Waste and Sharps

Needles, syringes, prescription medications, sharps containers. Never in a dumpster. Pharmacies accept old medications. Sharps go in approved containers for medical waste pickup.

Items With Weight Considerations (Allowed But Use Caution)

Concrete, Brick, and Block

Technically allowed, but extremely heavy. A small amount fills the weight limit fast. For concrete-heavy jobs, ask about a concrete-only smaller dumpster — you’ll pay less in overages.

Dirt and Soil

Same problem as concrete — extreme weight. A few yards of soil can blow through a 10-yard dumpster’s weight limit. Clean-fill-only dumpsters are sometimes a better option.

Roofing Shingles

Allowed, but at roughly 4–5 lbs per square foot installed, a typical home roof produces 3–5 tons of debris. Size your dumpster accordingly and don’t mix with other heavy materials.

What Happens If Prohibited Items Show Up at Pickup

One of three things, depending on what’s there:

  1. Minor issue (one tire, a few electronics). We pull it aside, charge a separate disposal fee, and route it correctly. Annoying but workable.
  2. Major issue (paint cans, asbestos suspected). Pickup gets delayed. You remove the items, then we come back.
  3. Hazmat at the transfer station. Worst case — if hazardous material makes it to the transfer station and gets detected, the entire load can be charged back to you as a hazmat load. That’s a four-figure fee.

Most issues are preventable by asking before you load.

Tips to Stay Compliant

  • If in doubt, ask. Junk Nurse — (630) 294-1340.
  • Set aside questionable items in a separate pile until you confirm.
  • Don’t bury prohibited items at the bottom of the load. The transfer station opens everything.
  • Take your county’s hazardous waste collection events seriously. Kane and DuPage both run multiple per year.

Why These Rules Exist

It’s not bureaucratic nonsense. Illinois banned electronics because lead and mercury were leaching into groundwater. Tires get banned because they trap water and breed mosquitoes. Refrigerant rules exist because of ozone damage. The rules protect public health — including yours and your family’s.
