Shed and Outbuilding Removal in Aurora, IL

Aurora shed removal — wooden, metal, and plastic. Partial demolition and haul-out included.

Shed and outbuilding removal in Aurora is a specialized job that combines partial demolition with haul-out. Junk Nurse handles wooden sheds, metal storage sheds, playhouses, and small outbuildings. Larger structures or anything attached to your house may require a licensed contractor and city permits — we’ll tell you which is which before quoting.

What shed removal actually involves

Most people picture shed removal as “just haul it away.” In practice, almost every shed has to be partially or fully demolished before it can be loaded onto a truck. Here’s the typical workflow:

  1. Empty the contents. You handle this before we arrive, OR we handle it as part of the job (priced separately).
  2. Detach utilities if any. Most sheds don’t have utilities, but some have electrical. Disconnected at the breaker.
  3. Disassemble the roof. Shingles or metal roofing, then plywood/OSB decking, then rafters.
  4. Disassemble the walls. Siding, then framing. Doors and windows come out as units when possible.
  5. Disassemble the floor. If on a wooden platform, the platform is the last piece. If on a concrete pad, the pad stays unless you want it broken up (separate job).
  6. Load and haul. Lumber and roofing go to disposal/recycling. Metal components to scrap.

For a standard 8×10 or 10×12 wooden shed, this is a 2–5 hour job for a 2–3 person crew.

What we can handle

Small to medium wooden sheds

Up to about 12×16 feet, single-story, free-standing (not attached to a structure). The classic backyard storage shed — T1-11 siding, asphalt shingle roof, double-door front, sometimes with a small window or two. We’ve removed dozens of these in Aurora, North Aurora, and the surrounding area.

Metal storage sheds

Arrow, Suncast, Rubbermaid — the prefab metal kits. These are often easier than wooden sheds because the panels disassemble back to their original kit form. Sharp metal edges require gloves; we come prepared.

Plastic / resin sheds

Suncast Tremont, Keter Factor, similar resin storage sheds. These are the easiest of all — usually can be disassembled in 30–60 minutes and the panels stack flat for hauling.

Playhouses and play structures

Kids’ wooden playhouses, plastic Little Tikes structures, larger play sets with swings and slides. We handle removal and disposal. For larger play structures (extensive wooden sets), it’s a longer job — on-site quote.

Greenhouses (smaller residential)

Hobbyist greenhouses with metal framing and polycarbonate or glass panels. Disassembly is more careful than other sheds because of glass, but well within our wheelhouse.

Lean-tos and small open structures

Carport-style lean-tos, firewood shelters, smaller pavilion structures — if it’s self-contained and reasonably sized, we handle it.

What we can’t handle (or what needs a permit/contractor)

Anything attached to your house

If the structure is attached to your house — an addition, an enclosed porch, an attached garage — that’s a remodeling demolition job, not junk removal. Permits are required in Aurora, and the contractor handling it will also handle the demo. We can come behind them to clean up debris if needed, but we don’t do attached demolition.

Large outbuildings (over 200 sq ft)

Anything bigger than about 12×16 may push into permit territory in Aurora (city rules vary by zoning; check before assuming). We’ll do an on-site assessment and tell you what we can handle and what requires a licensed demolition contractor.

Structures on a permanent foundation

If the shed sits on a poured concrete foundation rather than a simple slab or skids, removing the foundation may require a separate contractor with the right equipment (concrete saw, breaker hammer, hauling for concrete debris).

Structures with significant hazardous materials

Old sheds with asbestos siding (very rare but possible in pre-1980 structures) or lead paint on extensive interior surfaces require certified abatement before demolition. We’ll spot this and refer you to the right people.

Aurora permit considerations

The City of Aurora doesn’t require a permit for removing accessory structures under a certain size threshold. However, rules can change — check Aurora’s building department or call 311 if you’re unsure whether your shed removal requires a permit.

Generally, you don’t need a permit if:

  • The shed is free-standing (not attached to house, garage, or other structure)
  • The shed is on a non-permanent foundation (skids, concrete blocks, or a small slab)
  • There are no utilities to disconnect requiring inspection

You typically DO need a permit if:

  • The shed is attached to a structure
  • The shed is over a certain square footage (varies by zoning)
  • You’re also removing the foundation
  • Hazmat is involved

Junk Nurse handles non-permit-required shed removals routinely. For permit situations, we’ll defer to a licensed contractor.

Shed removal cost in Aurora

  • Small plastic/resin shed (under 8×6): $250–$450
  • Medium metal shed (8×10 to 10×12): $400–$700
  • Wooden shed (8×10 to 10×12, basic construction): $500–$900
  • Wooden shed (12×16, more complex): $800–$1,400
  • Playhouse (kids’ backyard structure): $250–$600
  • Greenhouse (hobby-size): $400–$800

Costs scale with size, construction complexity, condition (rotted wood is more work than intact lumber), contents (we can clear contents at additional cost), and access (backyard with narrow gate vs. driveway).

We quote on-site for almost all shed jobs — sight-unseen pricing for demolition isn’t accurate enough to commit to. We don’t charge for the quote visit, and if you decline, there’s no obligation.

What happens to the materials

  • Lumber and OSB/plywood: typically goes to a C&D (construction & demolition) recycling facility, where wood is processed for mulch or recovery
  • Metal siding and roofing: scrap metal recycling
  • Asphalt shingles: some facilities recycle shingles for asphalt paving; otherwise disposal
  • Plastic / resin panels: recycling when feasible; otherwise disposal
  • Hardware (hinges, brackets, screws): separated and routed to scrap metal

We don’t just dump shed debris in a landfill if there’s a better option. Volume of recoverable material from a typical shed is high, and we route it accordingly.

Combined shed removal + cleanout jobs

Very common: shed is full of decades of accumulated junk, you want all of it gone in one visit. We handle this as a combined job — clear the contents first, demolish and haul the shed second. Single quote, single visit, one price.
