Can you throw a mattress in a dumpster in Illinois?

Mattresses can technically go in Illinois dumpsters but typically incur surcharges. Better options.

Quick Answer: Technically yes at most Illinois facilities — mattresses aren’t federally banned from landfills. But most dumpster rental companies have mattress-specific surcharges ($25–$75 per mattress), and many transfer stations limit how many mattresses can go in a single dumpster. For most homeowners, hiring a junk removal company to take the mattress directly is faster, cheaper, and less hassle.

The technical answer

Illinois does not have a statewide mattress landfill ban. Mattresses can legally go in a roll-off dumpster, residential dumpster, or trash bin. However:

Dumpster rental companies charge mattress surcharges

Almost every dumpster rental company in the Aurora area — Republic Services, WM, Lakeshore Recycling Systems, local independents — charges $25–$75 per mattress placed in a rented dumpster. The fee covers their tipping cost at the transfer station, which is higher for mattresses than for general waste.

If you put four mattresses in your rental dumpster, expect an extra $100–$300 on your final invoice.

Some facilities limit mattress quantity per dumpster

To control bed bug risk and processing time, some haulers cap the number of mattresses per dumpster (often 2–4 max). Exceeding the cap can mean the dumpster gets rejected at the landfill, you pay for a return trip, and the mattresses come back to you.

You still have to load it

A queen mattress weighs 60–130 lbs and doesn’t bend gracefully. Loading it into a 4-foot-tall dumpster usually requires two people. If the dumpster is half-full of other debris, you may not have anywhere to put the mattress.

When dumpster rental makes sense

You’re already renting a dumpster for a major project (renovation, full estate cleanout, garage gut) and the mattress is just one item among many. In that case, accepting the per-mattress fee is reasonable.

When dumpster rental doesn’t make sense

You only have 1–3 mattresses to get rid of. Renting a dumpster for $300–$500 plus the mattress fees, plus a week of having the dumpster in your driveway, plus loading the mattress yourself — doesn’t pencil out against $89–$150 for Junk Nurse to come and take it.

Better options than dumpster for a single mattress

  • Junk Nurse mattress pickup: $89–$150, same-day, no DIY loading, no surcharges
  • Retailer haul-away when buying a new mattress: $25–$75 added to delivery
  • Aurora bulk pickup: free, but scheduled weeks out
  • Transfer station drop-off: $20–$40 fee, requires your truck

What about the curbside option?

Aurora’s regular trash pickup won’t take a mattress on a standard collection day. The city’s bulk pickup program is the curbside option, but it requires advance scheduling.

Putting a mattress at the curb on a non-scheduled day means it sits there indefinitely until you remove it — and gets weather-damaged, picked through, or reported as a code violation in some neighborhoods.

For larger mattress disposal jobs

If you’re clearing out an apartment with multiple mattresses, an estate with bedroom sets, or a property management situation, dumpster rental does sometimes make sense once you’re over 4–5 mattresses. We’ll tell you honestly which approach saves you money.
