Dirt Weight Math

Soil weighs roughly:

• 2,500–3,000 lbs per cubic yard wet
• 2,000–2,500 lbs per cubic yard dry

That means:

• 1 cubic yard of wet topsoil = ~1.3 tons
• Half a 10-yard dumpster of soil = 5 cubic yards = 6.5+ tons
• Most 10-yard dumpsters have 2–3 ton weight limits

You’d hit the weight limit at around 2 cubic yards of dirt — long before the dumpster looks full.

Clean-Fill Dumpster Option

Many dumpster companies offer dedicated clean-fill dumpsters for dirt, sod, concrete, and brick. These materials get recycled (soil used for grading, concrete crushed for road base) instead of landfilled, often at lower rates.

What Counts as Clean Fill

• Soil, dirt, sand
• Concrete (clean, no rebar)
• Brick and block
• Asphalt
• Crushed stone

No mixed debris (no wood, plastic, drywall) — that contaminates the fill.

Common Dirt-Heavy Projects

Pool Removal

Removing an in-ground pool produces 20+ cubic yards of dirt fill. Multiple containers or clean-fill specialty service.

Landscape Grading

Excess soil from grading typically fits in a clean-fill dumpster sized to the volume.

Trench Digging

Utility trenches, drainage projects — moderate dirt volumes. Often a 10-yard clean-fill works.

Mixing Dirt With Other Debris

Generally not allowed in clean-fill dumpsters (contaminates the fill stream). In a standard mixed-debris dumpster, technically allowed but you’ll hit weight limits before volume.

Sod and Yard Waste

Sod (grass with attached soil) treats similarly — heavy. Pure yard waste (leaves, branches) without soil is much lighter and fits standard dumpsters fine.
