Why Some Companies Add Mattress Surcharges

A handful of municipalities and transfer stations charge separate fees for mattresses because they take up volume and don’t compact well. Some dumpster companies pass that cost through as a per-mattress surcharge. Common rates range from $10–$30 per mattress.

Box springs treat the same as mattresses — no surcharge at Junk Nurse, allowed in the dumpster, count toward your weight.

Mattress Donation Option

If the mattress is in good condition (no stains, no bed bugs, less than 7 years old), donation is sometimes possible:

• Furniture Bank of Illinois — accepts mattresses in good condition
• Some homeless shelters accept them
• Salvation Army has varying policies by location

If donating, contact the recipient before pickup — many won’t accept used mattresses regardless of condition due to bed bug concerns.

How Mattresses Fit in a Dumpster

Mattresses take up significant volume but don’t weigh much (50–100 lbs each typically). They compact poorly — you can’t really break them down without specialty equipment. Plan for one mattress to take up about 1 cubic yard of dumpster space when loaded flat.
