Dumpster Rental Sizes: Which Roll-Off Is Right for Your Project?

A practical guide to 10-yard, 15-yard, and 20-yard roll-off dumpsters in Aurora, IL — and how to pick the right size the first time.

The wrong dumpster size will cost you more than the right one ever could. Order too small and you’ll pay a swap fee — sometimes more than a single rental. Order too big and you’re paying for empty air. After fifteen years of nursing, I’ve learned that planning matters. Same goes for dumpsters in Aurora.

This guide walks you through the three roll-off sizes Junk Nurse offers, what each one actually holds, and how to match a size to your specific project so you don’t waste money. If you’d rather just talk it out, call us at (630) 294-1340.

The Three Standard Sizes

Junk Nurse stocks the three most useful sizes for Aurora homeowners and contractors: 10-yard, 15-yard, and 20-yard roll-offs. We deliberately don’t carry the giant 30 and 40-yard containers — they’re built for industrial sites, and they damage residential driveways. Here’s what each size actually looks like.

10-Yard Dumpster

Roughly 12 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3.5 feet tall. It holds about 10 cubic yards of debris — or three pickup-truck loads. The weight limit is typically 2 to 3 tons.

Use a 10-yard for:

  • Single-room cleanouts (bedroom, basement, garage)
  • Small bathroom remodels (tear-out only)
  • Yard waste from a moderate landscaping job
  • Roofing on a small detached garage
  • Concrete or dirt-only loads (heavy material — small size keeps you under weight)

15-Yard Dumpster

Around 14 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. Holds about 15 cubic yards — roughly five pickup-truck loads. Weight limit is typically 3 to 4 tons.

Use a 15-yard for:

  • Kitchen remodels (cabinets, countertops, flooring)
  • Medium garage or basement cleanouts
  • Multi-room flooring replacement
  • Mid-size deck demolition
  • Most full home estate cleanouts where you’re keeping major furniture pieces

20-Yard Dumpster

About 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. Holds 20 cubic yards — about six to seven pickup-truck loads. Weight limit is typically 4 to 5 tons.

Use a 20-yard for:

  • Whole-home cleanouts where everything is going
  • Full roofing tear-offs on most Aurora-area homes
  • Large renovation projects with mixed debris
  • Commercial cleanouts
  • Move-out cleanouts where furniture, carpet, and appliances all go

How to Estimate Volume Without a Tape Measure

Most homeowners can’t visualize cubic yards. Here’s the shortcut we use: a standard pickup truck bed holds about 2.5 cubic yards when filled level. So a 10-yard dumpster is roughly four full pickup loads, a 15-yard is six, and a 20-yard is eight.

Walk through your project mentally. How many pickup-truck trips would it take to haul everything away yourself? Multiply by 2.5 — that’s your minimum cubic yardage. Then round up one size, because debris never packs as neatly as you’d think.

When to Size Up (Always)

Three situations where you should always rent the next size up:

  • Heavy debris. Concrete, brick, dirt, and roofing shingles add weight fast. Going bigger lets you spread the load and stay under the weight limit.
  • Furniture and bulky items. Couches and mattresses take up volume but weigh little. Bulk items waste cubic feet, so size up.
  • Project creep. Renovation projects almost always grow. The “just the bathroom” remodel turns into ripping out the hallway floor too. Trust me on this one.

Cost vs. Swap-Out Math

The difference between a 10-yard and a 20-yard at Junk Nurse is around $100. The cost of a swap (picking up your full one and delivering another) can be more than that, depending on routing. If you’re 70% sure you’ll need the bigger size, get the bigger size. The math almost always wins.

What Happens If You Overfill

Roll-off dumpsters have a fill line — usually marked at the top edge. Loads can’t extend above the rim because they shift in transit and create a road hazard. If your load is heaped above the rim when our truck arrives, you’ll either need to remove debris before pickup or pay an overfill fee. We’d rather just bring you a slightly bigger dumpster up front.

Driveway Fit Considerations

Larger dumpsters need longer driveways. A 20-yard is 22 feet long and the delivery truck needs another 60+ feet of clearance to drop it. If you have a short driveway or tight street access in older Aurora neighborhoods, a 15-yard may be your maximum regardless of project size. We’ll confirm fit before delivery.

Special Cases: Concrete, Dirt, and Roofing

For very heavy material like concrete, dirt, or shingles, the 10-yard is usually the right call — not because of volume but because of weight. A 20-yard filled with concrete would exceed truck axle limits and isn’t legal to haul. If you have heavy-only debris, mention it when you book so we can size appropriately.

Mixed-Load Strategy

If your project produces both heavy debris (concrete, dirt) and light bulk (furniture, drywall), don’t mix them in the same dumpster. Put heavy material in a small dumpster, light material in a bigger one. You’ll pay less in weight overages and still fit everything.

Choosing Between Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal

Sometimes the right answer isn’t a dumpster at all. If your project is a one-day cleanout and you don’t want to do the loading, junk removal is faster. If you’re doing a multi-day renovation and need to load as you go, a dumpster is more flexible. Junk Nurse offers both — we’ll recommend whichever fits your situation.
